Human Resources

The Community Disabilities Services sector supports people with disabilities to be a part of everyday life. We help them experience the joy and fulfillment of being valued and respected members of their neighbourhoods, schools and workplaces. And we make it possible to pursue their dreams and lead lives full of endless opportunities.

Our Current Workforce

Workforce 2010 conducted a survey of service providers in Alberta, sending them an extensive questionnaire that asked about their organization and the nature of the work they do.

The Results
Here is what we found:

  • Of the 176 agencies receiving the questionnaire, 76 returned it. (The 43% return rate is considered representative of agencies in the sector and the findings can be generalized to reflect all agencies in the province.)

  • The service providers have a total of 7,446 employees.

  • They provide services to 4,877 adults and 761 children with disabilities.

  • Nine out of 10 service providers were non-profit societies or businesses.

  • The characteristics of the workforce of those providing services to children and those providing services to adults are very similar. Therefore, results are presented together.

The Numbers
Based on the findings of the survey, we believe that:

  • About 17,000 people currently work in the community rehabilitation sector. (Some hold two or more jobs.)

  • About 15,000 adults and children with disabilities receive a diverse range of services from this workforce.
