Human Resources

The Community Disabilities Services sector supports people with disabilities to be a part of everyday life. We help them experience the joy and fulfillment of being valued and respected members of their neighbourhoods, schools and workplaces. And we make it possible to pursue their dreams and lead lives full of endless opportunities.

Overview

To understand the context of the community rehabilitation sector, it is important to consider the population of persons with disabilities in Canada and in Alberta—particularly those children, youth, and adults who receive supports and services. This Section describes what Workforce 2010 has found.

Albertans with Disabilities

In 2001, there were about 3.2 million people living in Alberta. By 2010, it is estimated that Alberta’s population will be 3.6 million.

Of Albertans age 15 and older in 2001, nearly 15%—more than 330,000 people—had some form of disability.

In 2001, there were approximately 11,500 people (age 15 years and over) with developmental disabilities in Alberta.

In 2004, this number had grown to nearly 13,000 persons with developmental disabilities.

Update
An August, 2005 report from Alberta Health contains the following estimates:

  • By the year 2033, there will be 5 million people living in Alberta.

  • Edmonton will grow to 1.5 million people, Calgary to 2 million.

  • The fastest growing region will be the Northeast, due to the booming oil sands industry.

  • The average age will be 41 years (compared to 29 years in 1986).

  • The number of seniors compared to working age Alberta will double to 28 per 100. The number of seniors will surpass the number of children by the year 2027.
